Buddy’s Auction – raising money for rescue schnauzers in need at DBARC

Mad About Schnauzers UK Fundraising began back in July 2016.  The group was created to run alongside the Mad About Schnauzers UK main group.

We had had a fantastic fun idea to raise money for schnauzers in need: an Online Auction! This would need its very own venue so that auction items would not get lost in the main group feed, hence the dedicated fundraising group was born. Our first auction with a limited number of members was great fun and a great success raising over £1,700!

“This kind of fundraising significantly changes the lives of schnauzers in the most need.”

Since the first one the group has grown significantly and we have had five further auctions, with the last one raising just short of £5,000.! This kind of fundraising significantly changes the lives of schnauzers in the most need.

Our 6th Auction – Buddy’s Auction

Our 6th auction, which commenced on 4th May and runs to 18th May, is a very important one as all funds raised are going to be dedicated to a very special puppy called Buddy whose story is below.

The current auction has got off to a fantastic start and as usual we have had some very generous donations and some crazy magnanimous bidding already! DBARC have donated a Day At DBARC:

“Come and spend the day at the Rescue Centre, meet some of the DBARC team and their own rescue Schnauzers”

For this one lot, bidding has currently reached an incredible £350!

As ever, small businesses and crafting members embrace our auctions and have so far donated lovely hand made items, including dog collars, dog jumpers, needle felted schnauzers, knitted schnauzers, candles, crocheted shawls, schnauzer fridge magnets and key holders. We also have many members that very kindly purchase items or find items to donate to the auction, many offering to cover the postage costs too!

So if you haven’t joined one of our auctions please come and find us as it’s great fun and all for an incredibly good cause!

Buddy’s Story

Buddy

Buddy is a very special puppy.  Buddy is 10 weeks old at the time of publishing this post, and was born at DBARC (The Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre).  His mother is Lara (now known as Clara), a rescue schnauzer from a puppy farm.  Lara arrived at DBARC back in January 2019.  Unbeknownst to anyone, she was pregnant when she arrived.

From then on, it has been a roller-coaster ride!  The vets couldn’t say for sure when she was due or how many puppies she was carrying.  When she did finally give birth, it was by emergency C-section.  Lara, Buddy and his 9 siblings all survived.

Unfortunately, the drama was nowhere near over.  Lara became very ill and had to undergo another operation and her chance of survival was 50/50.  In the meantime, 10 tiny puppies had to be hand-reared by the dedicated, hardworking staff and volunteers at DBARC.  To add to the struggles, various puppies had to be hospitalised and there were issues with keeping the pups warm enough.

Mad About Schnauzers Fundraising held a special auction selling Inka Design Pickle bracelets (Pickle is one of our schnauzer MAScots).  The auction was a huge success and the proceeds were used to buy an incubator for the puppies and for future DBARC residents.  A wonderful legacy thanks to Lara and her pups, and of course all the amazing MAS supporters who helped to raise the funds.

Incredibly, Lara pulled through and was able to re-join her pups and enjoy motherhood in the safe, loving environment at DBARC.

When they were old enough, they all paid a visit to The Ralph – a veterinary referral centre – to be screened for congenital cataracts.

The roller-coaster ride continued.  Like many of the puppy-farm schnauzers, Lara had cataracts.  This meant that there was a strong possibility that some or all of the puppies would have cataracts too.  When they were old enough, they all paid a visit to The Ralph – a veterinary referral centre – to be screened for congenital cataracts.  It was good news!  They were all clear.  It was just a case of waiting for a few more weeks before the pups could go off to start their lives in their new homes.

The symptoms were persistent

However, things were not quite as good as they seemed.  Buddy appeared to have developed a cold and had a runny nose.  The symptoms were persistent and Buddy’s carers recalled that when he was being fed milk as a tiny puppy, it would often leak through his nose.  He was examined several times, but there was nothing obviously wrong that was visible to the naked eye.

Buddy returned to The Ralph for further investigation.  They discovered that he has a cleft palate.  That changed everything for Buddy.  It meant that he could no longer go to his new home and that he had a surgical procedure to go through.

Buddy is too small at the moment to have an operation to correct the cleft palate.  He will have to wait until he is about 4 or 5 months old.  It is possible, he may have to undergo 2 procedures to fully correct the issue.  In the meantime, Buddy is being fostered and cared for.  He is a beautiful, happy little boy who is in the best possible hands.

Every one of the pups and Lara have closed their first chapter and embarked on the next chapters of their lives.  Buddy’s story has quite a different chapter 2 compared to his mother and siblings.

This is why we were honoured when DBARC asked us if we would like to dedicate our 6th auction to Buddy.

All the care and treatment that Lara and her puppies have needed has been very costly and is made possible by people like you who support fundraisers like Mad About Schnauzers.  This is why we were honoured when DBARC asked us if we would like to dedicate our 6th auction to Buddy.

Thank you for all your support.  Its is desperately needed and greatly appreciated.  Let’s make Buddy’s Auction our biggest yet!
